MSN Stock Quotes Webquery Broken Again "symbol(s) are either not supported or deprecated"

Hi,

The MSN stock quote query (from Excel) is broken again.  Why am I not surprised?

The following webquery:

http://www.msn.com/en-us/money/quoteslookup?SYMBOL=C,CMCSA,MET,DTV,US4128221086,IBM

returns the following:

The following symbol(s) are either not supported or deprecated.
MET,DTV,US4128221086,IBM

Note that US4128221086 is Harley-Davidson.  I used this when HOG stopped working.

Yesterday, quotes for C, CMCSA, & MET received the error, but the others all worked.  Today, C & CMCSA work while all the others fail.  After yesterday's failure of C, CMCSA, & MET, I changed the query to use ISINs and that worked, but today the ISIN for Harley-Davidson failed.

Please: (1) fix the new problems and (2) STOP BREAKING IT!

The prior thread for this problem is:

https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/office/en-US/e0cc883e-e020-42c8-b5c0-aa082d20d946/msn-stock-quotes-webquery-returns-symbols-are-either-not-supported-or-deprecated?forum=excel

Thanks,

Norman

Update:

Everything listed above works except for CMCSA.

A new symbol now doesn't work:  FGCKX

http://www.msn.com/en-us/money/quoteslookup?SYMBOL=CMCSA,FGCKX

I have fixed my spreadsheet to use the ISIN for CMCSA, but I don't know the CUSIP or ISIN for the FGCKX mutual fund (FIDELITY GROWTH COMPANY FUND: CL K).  Could someone please help me with FGCKX?

Thanks,

Norman

Update 2:

FGCKX now works.  CMCSA still doesn't work.

I found CUSIP for FGCKX by Googling "CUSIP FGCKX" and prepended "US".  That worked for the ISIN without the check digit.  I then tried all ten digits to see which one worked.

FGCKX CUSIP is 316200856.  The FGCKX ISIN is US3162008565 (the one that worked).

Update 3:

Today, everything I previously reported as broken now works.  However, something new is broken!

http://www.msn.com/en-us/money/quoteslookup?SYMBOL=FBGKX,US7443201022

returns an error for both (2nd is PRU).

Frustrated Update 5:

Where is the stability and quality??? Who is doing this???

http://www.msn.com/en-us/money/quoteslookup?SYMBOL=CBS,LPNT

both return "0" for the name.  Previously, only CBS did this.

Notice that the web interface (not the webquery) also shows the "0":

http://www.msn.com/en-us/money/stockdetails/fi-126.1.CBS.NYS?symbol=CBS&form=PRFISB

Notice that the copyright notices have not been updated from 2014 to 2015.

It no longer seems to be possible to obtain a quote for NWSA which is correct

http://www.msn.com/en-us/money/quoteslookup?SYMBOL=NWSA,News,US65248E1047,US65248E104

NWSA should be priced at about 14.64 USD.  "News Network Corp Public Co Ltd" is NOT the one I want.

How much longer will this nonsense continue until EVERYONE abandons the MSN Stock Quotes webquery?  Perhaps that has already happened (except for me).

As always, it is very difficult to know whether anyone sees these posts.  If you see this post and the problem affects you, speak up and add a comment.  Let Microsoft know you are still trying to use this interface.

I feel your pain.

I have been this function for years and then was disappointed when it blew up in December 2014.  After messing around with my spreadsheets I was finally able to get back to the point where I was able to get stable and reliable results.  But as you noted, the whole thing blew up again at the end of May 2015.

I too am left with queries that are providing inconsistent and unreliable results.

If Microsoft is no longer going to give us a reliable tool to work with, they should just discontinue the service completely.

If you find a reliable work around, please post your findings.

Thanks

I'm getting the same inconsistencies; each day there's a new group of symbols not recognized.  What an incredible failure they've turned this into.

Update 8:

Today's list of what doesn't work:

http://www.msn.com/en-us/money/quoteslookup?SYMBOL=IBM,INTC,VIAB,VZ

I have tried being nice.  That hasn't worked.  I have been a programmer for more than 50 years and I have never seen such sloppy work.  Every day there are new and different stocks which don't work.  There is absolutely no excuse for this continuing problem.

Worse in my opinion is the lack of communication about what's going on.  Is there anyone from Microsoft or the contractor who actually provides the webserver interface who can and will speak up?  If not, some number of people should be FIRED!  When I say FIRED, I don't mean reassigned to a different project; I mean terminated WITH CAUSE IMMEDIATELY!

Every day I modify the list of stocks for which I try to obtain quotes.  I rotate between the symbol, the company name, the ISIN, and the ISIN without the check digit until I find one that works.  I then use that one until it doesn't work.  I wonder why the ISIN without the check digit should work but I have found that to happen.

The list of failures varies MINUTE BY MINUTE.  When I first tried my list this morning, INTC worked. Then it did not.  Then it did.  Boy, this is fun.  I might speculate that there are multiple servers providing the quote service and that the list of acceptable entities (symbols, names, and ISINs) are either not synchronized at all or not synchronized correctly.  This IS NOT rocket science.  You (whoever is responsible for these problems) damn well ought (by now) to get it right or should immediately go find somewhere else to work.  You are in over your head and time is not going to solve your problems.

If I am totally confused and/or incorrect about what is going on, my apologies, but how could I possibly have any idea about what is happening based on the information you (and anyone else at Microsoft or the contractor) share?

It is way way PAST TIME to let us know what is going on and when we can expect a stable working service.

WAY BEYOND FRUSTRATED IN AUSTIN,

Norman

P.S.  The problem with the names for CBS and LifePoint appearing as "0" has been fixed.  The two copyright notices still say 2014 rather than 2015.

There we find Oracle Corporation ORCL...but I guess we knew that anyway!

PRU gets a London quote rather than a NYSE quote.  When I change PRU to ISIN US7443201022 it

still doesn't work:

http://www.msn.com/en-us/money/quoteslookup?SYMBOL=US7443201022

When I used the ISIN without the check digit, the query returns the correct result:

http://www.msn.com/en-us/money/quoteslookup?SYMBOL=US744320102

The problem is not that the check digit is wrong; no check digit works:

Hi Norman:I have the very same problem (rotating list of stock symbols not recognized...)

Did you have any response on that? That is really frustrating.

Anyone else knows of an alternate way of importing quotes in excel?

Hi Bob,

I have no evidence anyone who works for Microsoft or their contractor (if there is one) ever sees anything I post here.  I don't know how to get their attention.  I wish I did.  If you read my comment from June 17th (Update 8) above, you saw that I suggested that the person causing our pain be fired or reassigned to less challenging work.  No response to that or anything else.

I have found that the ISIN can often be used when the symbol doesn't work or gets the wrong quote.  Information about how to get International Securities Identification Numbers may be found in another thread:

https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/office/en-US/a351be17-b224-4b42-8392-93997d3fde9d/msn-stock-quotes-webquery-returns-data-not-available?forum=excel

Every day I reset my query to use all stock symbols (just the way it worked for years before "they" started making changes back on December 22, 2014) and test the query to see what doesn't work or gets the wrong quote.  Most of the time I can change the stock symbol to the ISIN and it will work, but not always.  Sometimes nothing works.  Other times only the "ISIN" without the check digit works.

Even when things seem to work once, the very next query may uncover new errors.  It's almost as if there are multiple load-sharing servers with different sets of symbols they can handle.  About the only certainly is that everything will change by the next day.

There is a non-Microsoft site that has information about alternatives to Microsoft:

http://www.excel-university.com/msn-moneycentral-iqy-web-query/

It has information about Yahoo and Google that might meet your needs.

Good luck,

Norman

IBM gets error; PRU gets wrong one; T DISAPPEARS.

http://www.msn.com/en-us/money/quoteslookup?SYMBOL=T,US00206R1023,US00206R102

For AT&T, the symbol disappears, the ISIN gets error, and the ISIN without the check digit works.

Will the problems never be resolved?

Mutual funds are STILL NOT WORKING:

http://www.msn.com/en-us/money/quoteslookup?SYMBOL=FBGKX,US:FBGKX,US3163895358,US316389535

http://www.msn.com/en-us/money/quoteslookup?SYMBOL=FDIKX,US:FDIKX,US3159102819,US315910281

http://www.msn.com/en-us/money/quoteslookup?SYMBOL=FGCKX,US:FGCKX,US3162008565,US316200856

Please, if anyone knows anything else to try, please let me know.

There are other problems involving fetching the wrong quote, but these other problems can be avoided by using one of the alternate (apparently acceptable) entity names.  For mutual funds (at least mine) there do not seem to be any acceptable alternate names.  HELP!

July 21st, 2015 6:09pm

My latest screw up. Suddenly I am getting quotes back for the correct stocks but traded on the MEX stock market with vastly different numbers i.e. roughly x15!

So my ORCL quotes that have always returned correctly are now coming back as ORCL.MEX and today also MSFT as MSFT.MEX when yesterday only ORCL was affected.

I think it's fair to say someone must be playing a game here and having a good laugh about this thread...it would be impossible to genuinely be this incompetent surely!

Hi Barry,

You must be a good luck charm for me.  Today my mutual funds are working correctly.

Thanks,

Norman

P.S. Actually I doubt that anyone from Microsoft or from a Microsoft contractor who actually "works" on the stock quote capability has ever actually looked at this thread.  There never have been any meaningful comments about what was/is going on other than a few by George Zhao at Pactera Technologies in some other threads.  IMO this is pretty sad.  Several times I have asked that we be provided with information about what "entities" should be accepted and suggested that the stupid generic link

returned when there is an error could direct you instead to some real information specific to the Excel webquery user.  Nothing like this has been done.  I also pointed out that the copyright notices are clearly for the wrong year.  The lawyers where I used to work would have been all over me if this happened on my watch.

Today they appear to be completely ignoring the US: preface as US:BWC & BWC each return BWC.CAQ

This has nothing to do with the Morningstar data, as Yahoo is able to find the correct data. A group of people need to be fired for the stupidity that persists.

Hi Tony,

I feel your pain.  Today I used the following query:

http://www.msn.com/en-us/money/quoteslookup?SYMBOL=T,US:T,US00206R1023,US00206R102

and got back the following:

The highlighted quotes are wrong.  Fortunate the ISIN and ISIN without the check digit still work.
